8 weeks LMP (last menstrual period)

  • Lungs begin to develop
  • The embryo is about ½ inch long
  • Elbows and fingers can be seen
  • Eyelids are beginning to form

4 months

4 months LMP

  • The gender of the fetus might be seen on ultrasound
  • The fetus is about 5 inches long and weighs nearly 4 ounces
  • The heart beats between 110 and 180 times per minute

5 months

5 months LMP

  • The fetus is about 10 inches long and weighs 11 ounces
  • The baby has unique waking and sleeping patterns

6 months

6 months LMP

  • Some babies born at this stage of development are able to survive
  • The baby inhales amniotic fluid in preparation for breathing
  • The baby recognizes his or her mother’s voice
